How to Most Efficiently Water your Lawn

    Last updated 8 months ago

Knowing how to efficiently water your instant lawn is a valuable bit of knowledge, especially when there are water restrictions in place. Even if you just want to save some water – which is always a good idea – there are definitely good ways to water your lawn that requires less water and, better yet, minimal effort.

First, only water your lawn when the grass needs it. You can tell if your grass is feeling thirsty by just looking at it. If it looks a bit on the blue-grey side, it’s time to water it. You can also test it by seeing if it bounces back upright immediately after you step in it – if it doesn’t, it needs water.

Secondly, water deeply to ensure total saturation of the soil and the best access for the grass roots. Use sprinklers to ensure total coverage and place them so they water only the lawn and not the street or anything else. You should also make sure you turn them on or programme them to turn on in the mornings, certainly before 9am, to reduce loss of water through condensation.

If water restrictions are a real problem in your area then it’s a good investment to get a rain barrel which you can set up to catch rainwater from your roof and store it until you need it. Even if it hasn’t rained for weeks your barrel will still contain a reserve of water that can be used.

    Irrigation Tips For Your Lawn

    Last updated 8 months ago

Watering your lawn can be a tricky task. If you use too little water too infrequently your grass could wilt away, but use too much water too frequently and your grass could drown. Here are a few irrigation tips to ensure your lawn stays luscious and sprightly all year round.

    Water In The Morning

Watering in the morning gives your turf the best chance of absorbing as much water as possible, especially during summer. If you water on a hot afternoon the water will likely evaporate before it reaches the roots.

    Using A Sprinkler System

Sprinkler systems can be a good investment – they provide a thorough and regular watering routine to give your turf the water it needs. It is essential to ensure that your sprinkler system is reaching all grassed areas, and is not constantly being obstructed by factors such as wind or weak water penetration. Check your sprinkler system at least once a month to ensure it is working efficiently.

    Types Of Sprinkler Systems

A good watering routine should involve up to 20 minutes of deep soaking at least once a week. Some irrigation systems, such as tripod sprinklers, tend to sprinkle only a touch of water, and will not provide a thorough soaking of the entire grass area. In this case drip irrigation systems are preferred, as they ease out water as low down to the grass as possible, preventing as much evaporation as possible.

Dealing With A Dry Lawn After A Drought

    Last updated 8 months ago

A period of drought can wreak havoc with a once luscious lawn. Not only will it leave a previously green lawn looking dry and brown, but it could also potentially kill its root system. Watch this video for tips on how to bring lawn back to life after a drought.

    Examine It Closely

It is important to remember that although a grassed area may look completely dry and barren this doesn’t necessarily mean that it is dead. When assessing your lawn after a drought you will need to check it thoroughly for signs of life from hidden blades of green grass.

    Fertilise

There are few better ways to encourage new growth of drought affected lawn than with fertiliser. It is best to find out which time of year is best to fertilise your lawn depending on the variety you have. It is usually recommended to fertilise at the beginning of a new season.

    Watering

While it is tempting to saturate your grass with water, this will not necessarily bring it back to life. It is recommended to follow a normal watering routine following a drought or very dry period. Watering your lawn thoroughly a couple of times per week (morning is best) should be sufficient enough to bring it back to life. If it does not replenish its green colour then it might be dead.

    Weed Prevention Tips

    Last updated 9 months ago

An invasion of weeds can not only make your lawn look messy, but it can also cause a number of problems for most turf varieties and other plants looking for nourishment as they will eat up all available nutrients for themselves.

    Establish A Weeding Routine

As tedious as weeding is, a regular weeding routine will help to diminish the presence of weeds on your lawn. Aim to pull weeds out by the root the minute they start to peek out from the lawn.

Cut Them Off At The Source

Another option to eliminate weeds in your garden is to prevent weed seeds from growing. In order to prevent weeds from sprouting it is recommended to pull out established weeds from an area, cover the soil in mulch, and sprinkle a weed prevention product according to the instructions which will usually entail a thorough watering a day or two later. It is also wise to monitor the area closely to remove any spontaneous weed seedlings from sprouting.

    Grow Your Lawn

If your lawn is covered in weeds you can eliminate their nutrients by growing your lawn a few inches taller in summer. Longer blades of grass will prevent available sunlight from reaching the weeds, and thus reducing the likelihood that they will sprout during summer.
