How to Get the Greenest of Green Lawns

    Last updated 5 months ago

There is no doubt that every homeowner would love nothing more than showing off a thriving green lawn to everyone in the neighbourhood. Now every homeowner can when buying the right turf for their local climate, and adopting the right lawn growing techniques.

    Soil Testing

Lawn is a living thing and needs plenty of attention, especially when it comes to the soil it is feeding off. If you are restoring grass make sure you conduct a thorough soil test (available at most garden centres) to see which nutrients it needs.

    Fertilising

While all lawns need fertiliser from time to time, too much can cause more damage than no fertiliser at all. Be sure to stick to the recommended amount listed by the fertiliser manufacturer, as well as checking whether your turf variety would benefit from certain fertiliser brands. Remember to water immediately after fertilising to allow the nutrients to reach the soil.

    Watering Routine

All lawn varieties should receive at least one inch of water per week. This can be increased during summer when temperatures are high and rainfall is scarce. If in doubt, talk to your turf supplier about recommended watering amounts for your specific turf variety.

    Mowing Technique

It is not enough to simply mow your lawn whenever it gets too long. Lawn needs to be mowed every week during summer, and should be done with an efficient mower with sharp blade as blunt blades can damage grass.

Why Aerating Your Lawn is Necessary

    Last updated 5 months ago

While most Australian turf varieties are hardy species that have adapted to Australian climate and conditions very well over the years, it is important to remember that turf is still a living thing that needs to breathe – a process referred to as aeration in the world of gardening.

    Signs of an Unhealthy Lawn

If your lawn has started showing signs of little to no growth, extremely dry patches, or difficulty absorbing water, you could have a case of unhealthy lawn on your hands. Lawn patches that are not properly aerated on a regular basis will not be able to absorb essential nutrients such as fertiliser and water as efficiently as it should, resulting in an excessive build-up of thatch – a mixture of living and dead organisms. While some level of thatch is very healthy for a growing lawn, excessive levels can be detrimental.

    Improved Nutrient Absorption Made Easy

The process of aerating lawn is simple and easy and can be done with a sturdy gardening fork and a bit of elbow grease. Aerating extremely dry soil will be nearly impossible, so an aerating routine is best completed when the soil is slightly moist, but not wet as this can compact the soil. Driving a garden fork halfway through the soil and wiggling it slightly is all it takes to open up the soil enough for necessary absorption to take place. If you are aerating a large patch of lawn specialty aerating boots are available.

    Drought Tolerant Grass

If you live in an area that is prone to drought it is worthwhile looking into drought tolerant grass varieties. Contact Green Acres Instant Lawns on (03) 9999 5708 for more information.

Meet The Man With the Best Lawn in Britain

    Last updated 5 months ago

It is rare to find a man with as much dedication to his lawn as Dr Chisholm Ogg from Long Wittenham in England. He has spent the last 14 years tending to his garden and will work on it for as long as ten hours a day, depending in his mood!

Chisholm was awarded the ‘Best Lawn in Britain’ by Briggs and Stratton, based on the quality, features and maintenance routines of his lawn. His tireless efforts to create and maintain the perfect garden have come to fruition with this win, but no one is more surprised than he is.

It’s not just his grass that is well done but his entire garden is very impressive with a total length of over 200 yards. The kicker is that Chisholm’s attention to detail extends to him using a pair of scissors to cut the lawn where the mower can’t reach and he will actually edge his yard every fortnight to keep it perfectly neat.

Speaking of mowers, he actually has five to take care of his extensive garden and he has one more coming, since he won an Allett Cylinder Mower as the prize for Best Lawn.

You may not be as finicky as Chisholm but if you’d like to try and reach that kind of standard in your garden, the best people to talk to are Green Acre Instant Lawns in Victoria. It has plenty of advice on what you should do to get the healthiest lawn around. Call them on 03 9999 5708 today.

How You Know It's Time To Replace Your Turf

    Last updated 6 months ago

People often forget that grass ages just like plants and trees. Grass can actually become old so it’s recommended that you replace it every 6-7 years for a healthy yard. If your outdoor area is looking a bit bedraggled, it might be time to do a complete garden reboot. Here are some signs that it’s time to look for a turf supplier in Melbourne.

    Too Many Weeds

Sometimes you do all you that can and it just doesn’t help. If your grass is weed-infested, even though you regularly apply weedkiller, then you need to consider changing your grass completely. As a last ditch effort, you can try hand-pulling all your weeds out in an attempt to be rid of them, but sometimes it’s better to just completely restart. A good indication is the amount of clover you have in your yard, if you have an excessive amount your soil may be dead.

    The Lawn is Tired

As was mentioned earlier, lawns age with time and there’s only so much you can do to make it young and fresh again. If your grass patch is starting to take on a yellow/green tinge, you can probably save it by adjusting the pH but if it’s completely yellow, it’s time to replace the turf.

    Bare Soil

It could just be that it’s a high traffic area, but if your lawn is starting to take on bald spots, there are things that you can do to try and restore it. You can try reseeding it or if it’s a water issue in that spot, you can water more liberally in that area. If you’ve tried for a season and it’s still not growing out, it may be time for a new lawn.

There could be multiple reasons why your lawn looks unhealthy and before you lay down anything you should determine what the cause is. It could be anything from insects to grass disease to lack of proper care and you have to make sure it doesn’t happen again!

Do you need new turf? The best people to talk to are the professional staff at Green Acres Lawn. Talk to them today on 03 9999 5708 for advice on how to achieve the best looking yard.
