It’s said that a dog is a man’s best friend, however that’s not always the case – particularly when one is digging up your perfectly manicured lawn!
Even after installing sprinkler systems and making sure their soil is in tip-top condition, countless Australian gardeners have their lawns mangled by overzealous dogs every year, sometimes even by dogs that aren’t their own. Fortunately, dogs can be trained to stop digging, although if the problem dog belongs to someone else a quiet word with the owner might be the best solution.
Most dogs dig because they’re in search of some physical or mental stimulation, so an easy way to get them to stop can be to make sure you’re giving your dog lots of exercise, and playing games with it.
Your dog might also be digging in order to bury bones. If you reckon that might the case, then there’s a pretty simple solution – stop giving him or her bones! Instead, offer them a chewing toy. They definitely won’t bury that.
An interesting method of prevention involves blowing up balloons and digging these in the area you know your dog likes to dig. Chances are, the next time he or she is digging one of them will pop, giving your dog an almighty fright and (hopefully) scaring him off trying it again.
Finally, your dog needs to know that it isn’t acceptable to dig holes in the garden. After all, if you only curse under your breath every time it happens then you can’t blame the poor animal for thinking it’s okay. Voice your displeasure next time it happens, and this could go a long way.

It’s a fact of gardening life that you need good soil to enjoy healthy and green lawns and plants. However, that doesn’t always happen naturally.
Without good soil plants won’t reach their full potential – in fact they might not even grow at all. If you’d like to improve your own soil, then you’ll likely have to improve the soil’s pH levels with some organic matter.
To do so, start by digging the soil thoroughly while breaking up any large clods or lumps you encounter with a spade, before using a fork to smooth over afterwards.
From there, add the organic matter – this can consist of homemade garden compost, bagged compost or manure, depending on your personal preference (or how much of a smell you’re prepared to deal with!).
Now dig and rake over the soil again to make sure you’ve properly mixed the organic matter in with the original soil, before treading the area.
Finally, break up any large lumps of soil with a rake before sprinkling fertiliser over the area and raking it into the soil.
If you’re not particularly used to gardening, make sure to warm up correctly before taking care of any digging or raking. You’d be surprised how many people injure themselves this way, so take care!
