Green Acres Explains The Best Lengths To Cut Different Grass Types and Why
The length you choose for your turf grass isn't only important for the aesthetics of your lawn, but can also help the turf to flourish in different weather and climate conditions.
Recommended Cutting Heights
Different types of grass have different recommended cutting heights, based on their density and frequency of maintenance needed. Santa Ana Couch turf should be kept relatively short for example - between 10 and 20 millimetres - while Tall Fescue and Kikuyu King's Pride grasses can grow between 20 and 40 millimetres. It's generally advised to favour the high end of these height ranges, as taller grass can develop a deeper root system, which makes the turf more resilient during droughts and water shortages, as well as providing greater shade to help soil retain its moisture.
Grass Height By Season
Cutting your grass lower in the summer can reduce your other maintenance requirements, by preventing weeds and pests from flourishing. Care needs to be taken to never remove more than one third of the grass length during a single mowing, as this can cause long-term damage - instead, spread your mowing duties across several days or weeks.
